Escape the Backrooms Enemy Types

Medium threat

Updated 2026-06-25

Overview of Enemy Types

Escape the Backrooms throws you into a labyrinth of endless yellow rooms, but the true danger comes from the creatures that stalk you. Understanding enemy types is crucial for survival. Each entity has a unique behavior pattern, spawn trigger, and threat level. This guide breaks down every major enemy you will encounter.

Always listen for audio cues. Many enemies in Escape the Backrooms announce their presence with distinct sounds, giving you a chance to hide or flee before they spot you.

Common Entities

These are the enemies you will face most frequently during your first runs. They are dangerous but predictable once you learn their patterns.

The Hound

A fast, quadrupedal creature that patrols the main rooms. It is attracted to sound and light. If you run or use a flashlight near it, it will chase you. The best strategy is to crouch and turn off your light when you hear its growl.

The Smiler

An entity that appears in darker areas, often near doorways. It looks like a floating face with a wide grin. Staring at it for too long causes it to rush you. Look away immediately and move sideways to avoid its gaze.

The Clump

A cluster of limbs that hangs from ceilings. It drops down when you walk underneath it. Always check the ceiling before entering a new room. If you see one, take an alternate route or crawl slowly past it.

Rare and Boss Enemies

Some enemies only appear in specific levels or after triggering certain events. These encounters are more complex and require precise actions to survive.

The Partygoer

Found in Level Fun, this entity mimics friendly players. It invites you to a "party" but attacks if you refuse or fail its puzzles. Stay alert in that level and never trust a lone player standing still.

The Skin-Stealer

A rare entity that can disguise itself as furniture or walls. It waits in ambush near exits. Use your camera or a glowstick to reveal its true form before passing.

The Balloon

A floating balloon that drifts through corridors. Touching it triggers a loud pop that attracts nearby Hounds. Avoid physical contact and do not pop it intentionally.

How to Survive Each Type

Survival depends on knowing the correct counter for each enemy. Memorize these quick tips to avoid unnecessary deaths.

  1. Identify the threat

When you hear a sound, stop moving. Crouch and listen. Determine if it is a Hound (growl), Smiler (humming), or Clump (scuttling). Each sound corresponds to a specific enemy type.

  2. Use the correct tool

Flashlights attract Hounds but repel Smilers. Glowsticks reveal Skin-Stealers. Cameras help spot Clumps in dark ceilings. Always carry at least two different light sources.

  3. Know when to run

If a Hound has already spotted you, do not hide. Run in a zigzag pattern and close doors behind you. For Smilers, never run while looking at them—turn your back and sprint.

  4. Hide effectively

Lockers and closets are safe zones for most enemies, but not for Skin-Stealers. When hiding, hold your breath (stop moving) and wait at least 30 seconds after the last sound.

Enemy Spawn Locations

Different levels have different enemy distributions. Knowing where each type spawns helps you prepare your inventory and route.

Level 0 - The Backrooms

Mostly Hounds and occasional Clumps. Low light areas near exits may have Smilers. This is the safest level for learning enemy patterns.

Level 1 - The Hub

High density of Hounds near the central hub. Smilers guard the side corridors. Bring extra batteries for your flashlight.

Level 2 - The Pipe Dreams

Skin-Stealers are common here. Clumps hang from every ceiling. Move slowly and check every corner.

Level 5 - The Hotel

Partygoers and Balloons appear frequently. Avoid open lobbies and stick to service corridors.

How do I know which enemy is chasing me?
Listen to the sound. Hounds make a low growl. Smilers produce a high-pitched hum. Clumps sound like wet footsteps above you. If you see a floating smile, it is a Smiler.

Can I kill enemies in Escape the Backrooms?
No. There is no weapon system. Your only tools are evasion, hiding, and using light sources strategically. Direct confrontation always ends in death.

What happens if I look at a Smiler?
Looking at a Smiler for more than 3 seconds triggers a chase. It moves faster than you, so you must break line of sight by turning a corner or entering a locker.

Are there any friendly entities?
No. Every entity in the base game is hostile. Some players may pretend to be friendly in multiplayer, but NPCs are always dangerous.

How do I avoid The Clump?
Shine your flashlight upward before entering any doorway. If you see a dark mass on the ceiling, crawl or take a different path. Running triggers its drop attack.
